Botox

What is Botox®?

Botox® is an FDA-approved treatment that is used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines on the face and neck. This injectable medication is applied directly to the areas that most need help and can produce remarkable results in a relatively small amount of time. Understanding the basics and benefits of this product is a great way to ensure the freshest and most youthful look for our patients at the New York Dermatology Group.

When injected into the desired areas, Botox has a relaxing effect on muscles in the face, which can reduce the appearance of smile lines, frown lines and crows feet. Botox treatments can also reduce the visibility of glabellar lines, which are located between the eyebrows and can sometimes create a severe or unhappy look for patients. By relaxing the muscles in the face, Botox can produce dramatic results for our patients and can help each of our clients to look and feel great every day.

How does Botox® work?

Clostridium botulinum has a paralyzing effect on the muscles of the body. When measured out in specific small doses and injected into the muscles of the face, it paralyzes these muscles to create deep relaxation. This eliminates many lines, including frown lines and crows feet. Some patients may benefit from a Botox brow lift, which uses targeted injections of Botox to relax muscles and to lift the brows without a surgical procedure. This is rapidly becoming a popular option for patients at the New York Dermatology Group.

How long does Botox® take to work?

For most of our patients, Botox produces visible results in between two and 10 days after the Botox injection. Some of our patients may see a reduction in lines and wrinkles almost immediately. In other cases, the results could take longer to show up. The speed with which patients will see results typically depends on three basic factors:

• The resiliency and health of the skin and underlying muscle tissue
• The locations of the injections
• The depth and severity of the lines to be treated

Nearly all patients see the full results of their procedure by 14 days after their course of injections has been completed.

How Long Do the Effects of Botox® Last?

For most of our patients at the New York Dermatology Group, Botox treatments last for four to six months. After this time, it is usually safe to perform another round of treatments to refresh the younger, smoother look produced by this cosmetic procedure. Some studies indicate that strenuous exercise and time spent in the sun without adequate sunscreen can reduce the amount of time that Botox treatments last. It is best to avoid these activities if possible during the immediate aftermath of a Botox procedure.

Dysport® vs. Botox®

Considering the benefits of Botox vs Dysport will typically help patients to determine which of these treatments is best suited to their needs. Botox is used for a wider range of areas on the face and neck, however, while Dysport has been approved by the FDA solely for help in reducing the appearance of glabellar lines. Both treatments are based on the Clostridium botulinum bacterium. For patients who are looking for a brow lift, a solution for smile lines or help with lines under eyes or on the forehead, however, Botox is a more versatile solution that offers added help for patients at our office and throughout our area.
