Dermal Fillers

What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable gels that are used to restore lost volume, particularly in the face. They are frequently used to fill in the lines and wrinkles that commonly occur with aging, but they can also be used to improve the shape and size of the lips or to create beautiful contours in the cheeks. Occasionally, they may be used to fill in depressed scars as well.

As you age, your skin and underlying tissues naturally begin losing volume when collagen stores decrease. This may produce the look of hollowed-out cheeks or of thinning lips. In addition, constant facial movements through the years gradually etch lines and wrinkles into your skin. With dermal fillers, you can fight against facial wasting while softening harsh lines and creases throughout your face.

The most common type of dermal fillers is made from hyaluronic acid, a substance found naturally in your body. When injected, these fillers not only instantly add volume to the area but also continue to improve your youthful look over time by attracting water molecules into the area. Most dermal fillers we offer work in this way. On the other hand, Radiesse is made from calcium hydroxyapatite, another substance naturally found in the body that provides immediate volume while also stimulating your body to start making more of its own collagen.

Dermal fillers can be used in many areas throughout your face but are most notably used around the eyes, nose, mouth and forehead, which frequently show lines from your many facial expressions as you age. In addition, certain filler types can plump up your lips or be used in your mid-face region to add volume to sunken cheeks.

As a minimally invasive treatment, dermal filler injections are quite fast and easy. First, your aesthetic provider will assess your face and map potential injection points. Second, the treatment areas will be cleansed. Depending on your preferences and on the type of filler used, you may want local anesthetic at this time. Third, you will receive a series of injections throughout the chosen sites to create a completely natural look. This entire process usually takes no longer than 15 minutes after your first appointment. Downtime is limited or nonexistent.

What Can Dermal Fillers Treat?

The following are the areas that are most commonly treated with dermal fillers.

Bags Under Eyes
Under eye filler can get rid of the sunken cavities that often appear beneath your eyes as you age. It can help you look perkier and less tired while also brightening the entire area.

Sunken Cheeks
There are currently several injectables that are approved as cheek fillers. These are used to treat hollowed-out cheeks and to improve your facial proportions and symmetry.

Marionette Lines
These lines naturally form over many years between the corners of your mouth and your chin thanks to the effects of gravity. Dermal fillers can treat mild to moderate lines here to lift the smile and to get rid of the sagging look created by marionette lines.

Nasolabial Folds
Nasolabial folds form over time from all of your facial expressions. These lines extend from the corners of your mouth up to the corners of your nose but can be erased with a variety of different fillers.

Thin Lips
Over the years, your lips may naturally thin. On the other hand, you may have been born with thin lips. Whichever describes you, a recommended lip filler can safely create a gorgeous and natural-looking pout.

Smile Lines
While these lines show a life well-lived, they can also make you look prematurely old. Simple hyaluronic acid filler injections can eliminate this problem.

How Long Does a Dermal Filler Last?

All dermal fillers offer temporary results. If you wish to maintain your gorgeous, youthful results, you will need to stop by NYDG regularly for touch-up injections. However, you may be surprised at just how long some of the newer types of fillers last. The majority of options, including Juvederm Ultra and Ultra Plus, can last for 6 to 12 months. Others, such as some lip fillers, last for one to two years.

How Much Does It Cost?

The cost for all types of dermal fillers varies dramatically based on many factors, including the filler you are using, the amount of filler used and the area that you are treating. In general, fillers are priced by the syringe or by the number of units used, and your aesthetic practitioner can discuss the exact cost with you during your consultation.

What Can You Expect After Treatment?

After your quick treatment, you will immediately be able to go about the rest of your day with virtually no downtime. You may notice some redness at the injection sites as well as a bit of swelling and bruising, but this should all clear up within 48 hours. Applying cold packs to the area may help with these symptoms.

The great news is that you will notice some immediate results with all of these fillers as they instantly create volume in your face. Over time, you may see increasing results from hyaluronic acid fillers as water continues to be attracted to the gel-like molecules.

Dermal Fillers Versus Botox?

While both dermal fillers and Botox are used on lines and wrinkles, there are several key differences between these treatments as well as their uses. Unlike fillers, Botox is made of a neurotoxin known as botulism A, which temporarily paralyzes the smallest muscles beneath the facial skin. Once they are paralyzed, these muscles can no longer wrinkle the skin lying over them. This helps to smooth out the very fine wrinkles that are known as expression lines. Cosmetic Botox is mainly used on crow’s feet around the eyes, on the vertical lines that form between the eyebrows and on horizontal forehead lines.

Restylane Versus Juvederm?

Both of these fillers can be used in similar locations. As you work with your aesthetic practitioner to decide on which one is best for you, you may be stumped at how they are even different. The main difference between them is the size of their gel molecules, which creates differing textures. The more granular feel of Restylane makes it a better choice for larger rather than smaller areas. Plus, it stays in place quite well following injections. However, it may take it a bit longer to show full results even though it shows initial results quickly.

More than a million people choose dermal filler injections every year in order to look their best and feel self-assured. Dermal fillers often eliminate the need for expensive surgeries that typically come with lengthy downtimes and the potential for serious side effects. Indeed, this minimally invasive option has become quite popular among both men and women who are looking for a fast and effective way to fight against lines, wrinkles and loss of volume throughout the face.

At NYDG, we can provide you with all of the top under-eye, lip and cheek fillers that are approved today, helping you choose the option that is best for you. We will empower you to take control of your wellness and beauty with simple aesthetic solutions provided by acclaimed dermatologists and other medical experts.
