Microneedling

NYDG’s team of board-certified dermatologists are dedicated to helping you enhance your natural beauty and address skin concerns. Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that stimulates collagen production, treats scars, and improves the overall texture and appearance of your skin. Read on to learn more about this innovative treatment and how it can benefit you. In addition to the importance of choosing an expert dermatologist to administer this procedure, below are other important facts you should know about this innovative treatment option.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure that stimulates the body’s own natural healing process to reduce the appearance of scars and to provide other benefits for your skin. This procedure is a cost friendly option and can often produce noticeably improved skin texture within just a few treatments. For many of our patients, microneedling offers added help in improving appearance and reducing the visibility of fine lines, wrinkles, and scars.

What are the benefits of Microneedling?

Some of the most important benefits of microneedling include the following:

Improves Skin Texture & Reduces Wrinkles: Microneedling effectively minimizes the appearance of acne scars, surgical scars, fine lines, and wrinkles. It also helps reduce the size of enlarged pores, giving your skin a smoother texture.

Enhances Skin Elasticity: The stimulation of collagen and elastin production helps improve the skin’s elasticity and firmness, resulting in a more youthful appearance.

Reduces Hyperpigmentation: Microneedling can address various forms of hyperpigmentation, including sunspots, age spots, and melasma, promoting a more even skin tone.

Increases Product Absorption: By creating micro-channels in the skin, microneedling enhances the absorption of topical products, allowing them to penetrate deeper and work more effectively.

Safe for All Skin Types: Microneedling is suitable for all skin types and tones, making it a versatile treatment option for a wide range of patients.

How does Microneedling work?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a cutting-edge procedure that involves creating tiny, controlled micro-injuries on the skin’s surface using a specialized device. These micro-injuries prompt your body’s natural healing process, leading to the production of new collagen and elastin fibers. The result is reducing wrinkles and scars with smoother, firmer, and more youthful-looking skin.

Microneedling is believed to have originated in ancient China as a medical treatment for various skin conditions and as a form of acupuncture. In 1905, a German dermatologist named Ernst Kromayer was the first documented practitioner of microneedling to reduce the visibility of scars, birthmarks and areas of hyperpigmentation.

At NYDG, we utilize state-of-the-art microneedling technology like Endymed RF to ensure optimal results for our patients. Our dermatologists have extensive training and expertise in performing this procedure, ensuring your safety and comfort throughout the treatment.

The Microneedling Procedure

Microneedling should be performed by a board-certified dermatologist. During your initial consultation, our dermatologist will evaluate your skin and discuss your concerns and treatment goals. They will create a customized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.

On the day of your microneedling session, a numbing cream may be applied to ensure your comfort during the procedure. Our dermatologist will then use a specialized device with fine needles to create controlled micro-incisions in the target area. The treatment time varies depending on the area being treated, but typically lasts between 30 minutes to one hour.

After the procedure, a serum will be applied to your skin to speed up the healing process. Your skin may appear slightly red and feel sensitive, similar to a mild sunburn. These effects are temporary and typically subside within a few days. Our dermatologist will provide you with specific aftercare instructions to promote healing and maximize the benefits of your treatment.

How long does Microneedling last?

While you may notice some immediate improvements after a single session, optimal results are typically achieved through a series of treatments. Our dermatologist will recommend the appropriate number of sessions based on your skin condition and treatment goals.

As collagen production continues over time, you will notice progressive improvement in your skin’s texture, tone, and overall appearance. Once your course of treatment is finished, you will typically need to schedule maintenance visits once every six months to prolong the results.

What are the types of Microneedling?

There are three basic types of microneedling used to treat skin conditions and to improve the appearance and elasticity of the skin:

•  Mechanical microneedling is the most common form of professional microneedle treatment. This method uses a pen equipped with many very small needles, which is carefully moved over the treatment area. Mechanical microneedling procedures create numerous tiny incisions in the skin per square inch, which makes them a highly effective treatment for hyperpigmentation, scar tissue and wrinkles.

• Mesotherapy methods use minimally invasive methods to treat only the surface of skin. This allows other skin care remedies to penetrate into the skin more effectively. Mesotherapy is ideally suited for creating a healthy glow for special occasions or as an addition to your regular skin case routine.

• Fractional radiofrequency methods for microneedling use heat in combination with somewhat larger needles to stimulate the release and production of collagen and elastin. Radiofrequency microneedling treatments can increase the thickness of collagen in the affected area, which can allow skin to become more resilient and can produce a healthy glow for your face and other areas of your skin.

While home microneedling kits and medical spas are less expensive, these are not recommended by medical professionals. Without advanced equipment and expert MDs, it is easy to injure the skin or to cause an infection that can further mark the area being treated. Working with a board certified dermatologist is the best strategy for protecting your health and enhancing your appearance safely.

What conditions can be treated with Microneedling?

Microneedling is used to treat a range of skin issues and conditions, including the following:

Microneedling for acne: Increasing the production of collagen and stimulating the healing process for skin cells can often have a significant positive effect on acne outbreaks and can help you put your best face forward every day.

Microneedling for hair loss: Microneedling has been used to increase circulation and to stimulate the regrowth of hair as part of an overall approach to this issue.

Microneedling to reduce wrinkles: Our microneedling services can reduce damage to skin caused by excessive sun exposure and can reduce the appearance of wrinkles to help you achieve a more youthful appearance. Microneedling under eyes and around the mouth can eliminate small wrinkles and creases to help you feel more confident in your appearance.

Microneedling for stretch marks: Stretch marks can be minimized in our center with advanced microneedling techniques.

Microneedling for scars: One of the first uses of microneedling was to treat scars from acne and from accidents. At NYDG Integral Health & Wellness, we offer microneedling for acne scars and other scars that can reduce the visible signs of these issues.
