A major advancement in the technology of anti-aging is the development of safe and long-lasting injectable fillers that are used to correct the loss of facial fat that occurs with age. Referred to as Collagen Replacement or Soft Tissue Replacement, or Facial Fillers (or just Restylane, a brand name) the objective is to instantly rejuvenate the face with minimally invasive injections that are strategically placed by the dermatologist to: diminish nasolabial folds; re-plump sagging cheeks; re-contour thinning lips; create a stronger jaw line; and/or minimize scars and deeper wrinkles.
One of the most recognizable names among these products is Restylane. It and its cousin Perlane are made of Hyaluronic Acid, a natural substance that exists in the human body and is both biodegradable and biocompatible (and thus does not require testing for allergic reactions. The hyaluronic acids are long lasting and extremely reliable. Restylane is FDA tested and approved for cosmetic use.
Since the new crop of fillers comes in a variety of weights and thicknesses, they offer considerable flexibility in addressing the specific cosmetic concerns of individual patients. With most fillers, eventually touch-ups are required to maintain the initial effect of the correction.
