Travel Medicine

Travel medicine is a subspecialty at NYDG designed for international travelers who wish to be advised of the health risks they face in the countries they plan to visit and want to know what should be done to prevent serious conditions like Hepatitis A & B, Malaria, Typhoid, Meningitis, Polio and Yellow Fever.  Our doctor of internal medicine is expert in travel medicine and provides travelers with the required or recommended shots, as well as vital information about health conditions and disease risks around the globe.  If you are planning an international trip, we recommend you schedule a pre-trip consultation well in advance of your departure date.

NYDG Flash Facts
  • About a third of travelers to foreign countries experience a travel-related illness, often diarrhea or upper respiratory infection. These and more serious conditions can be prevented or prepared for before you leave home.

  • Travel Medicine is particularly relevant for international travelers planning to visit rural or undeveloped countries, where many illnesses may occur.

  • Besides the routine vaccinations required for visits to particular countries (country-specific risks are listed in the "Yellow Book," published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), travelers learn of the hazards of insects (malaria, yellow fever, tick-borne encephalitis and dengue fever), strong sun, transportation risks and sexually transmitted diseases.

  • Immunizations such as tetanus and influenza should be updated in advance of departure, as should dental care and routine medical needs.  Travelers are advised of what health related items to carry, and to check in advance the requirements and exclusions regarding international travel on their medical insurance plans.
