Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy is an office procedure for treatment of varicose veins and ‘spider’ or ‘starburst’ veins. During sclerotherapy treatment, the dermatologist injects a solution of sodium chloride directly into the targeted vein with a fine needle. This solution irritates the lining of the vessel, and eventually causes it to collapse and disappear. Spider veins are small, thin veins close to the surface of the skin and usually take on one of three basic patterns: a spider shape, branch-like shapes or clusters in thin, separate lines. Varicose veins are larger, darker in color and tend to bulge. Weight gain, some medications and prolonged sitting or standing can be a cause of unsightly veins, as can pregnancy or hormonal changes. Sclerotherapy is a safe procedure that has been used effectively by dermatologists for years for this type of vein removal.

Sclerotherapy patients are fully mobile post-procedure (in fact, are encouraged to walk). Support hosiery or compression wraps are worn temporarily.

Sclerotherapy is appropriate for men or women. A consultation with the dermatologist will determine if sclerotherapy is a viable treatment option. Pregnant or breastfeeding women are often advised to postpone treatment.
