New to Our Best List this month is Greenwich Village eatery, The Little Owl, described in Bon Appetit Magazine as "that little restaurant you wish were right around the coner".

Tragically, there are only 28 seats in Joey Campanaro's seasonal American spot that's taking New York City by storm.  If it takes you a year to get a reservation, its worth it!

This Month: Dr. David ColbertDr. David Colbert

Every month, Events of the Heart features people of interest and doing excellent work for the mind, body, and spirit.

We love Dr. David Colbert and his completely groovy office that feels more like a downtown loft than a doctors practice.  He's like an artist of the skin, who truely thinks of your face and helps you to decide what will be the most beneficial treatments to choose.

As the founder and head physician of the New York Dermatology Group,
you can find Dr. Colbert on the web at:

www.DavidColbertMD.com
or you can call the office: 212-533-8888.

Issue: # 10 October 2008
Yes, its October already, weren't there fireworks a minute ago!? Not the political ones that are going on now, but the ones on a blanket, gazing up to the sky kind.  In October for me, its an apple a day time, putting away my bathing suits and taking out the turtleneck time, and for sure time tending to the projects that were shelved from summertime.

October is the beginning of many things, a new season with some edited updates of clothes, the new fall tv line-up, health checkups: mammograms, heart check-ups, teeth cleaning and a new scent in the air along with the new President on it's way.

October is also a great time to shore up your immunity with extra vitamin b's, c's, and omegas, washing your hands more than usual, and restoring your skin's moisture by bathing in oils and swathing yourself in creams-- women, you know what I mean.

For me though, October will always be my second birthday, and this year especially. On October 2nd, I celebrated 10 years out from my triple bypass.

10 years is a significant anniversary for heart surgery.  It's when you can really look back, count blessings, see the improvements and understand all the transformations that have been part of the journey.

For a year I sat there after my surgery asking, "How could this happen to me?".  Now, with my every waking hour birthing and running Events of the Heart, advocating for all women with heart concerns, I understand why it was me.

Timing like all healing was the answer to everything!!

All my best, pamela

 Heart News:

TeeccinoHeart Healthy Herbal Teas & Coffees

Steady heart beats and lowered stress are two goals of any heart health program. The most common drinks in our culture, coffee and tea, both contain caffeine that elevates stress, raises blood pressure, and causes heart rate increases; none of which are desirable when your goal is to strengthen your heart! Fortunately, there are naturally caffeine-free beverages that can be brewed just like coffee and tea. As an added health benefit, some of these herbs have heart healthy nutrients that can enhance heart health.

For tea drinkers, The Republic of Tea recently launched Get Heart® as part of their Be Well Red tea line designed by Caroline MacDougall. Get Heart is based on rooibos, the red tea, the naturally caffeine-free and high antioxidant alternative to green tea. Herbs that help strengthen the heart muscle, increase blood flow to the heart, decrease blood pressure, and steady the heartbeat are added to this tea such as hawthorne berries & leaves, hibiscus flowers, ginkgo leaves, and blueberries. With a fruity natural berry flavor, you don't have to " skip a beat; just brew and sip to your heart's content" as the Minister of Leaves at the Republic of Tea recommends.

Coffee drinkers, don't despair. If watery teas are not for you, try brewing up a roasted, robust cup of Teeccino® herbal coffee, a naturally caffeine-free coffee alternative that brews and tastes like coffee.  High in heart healthy potassium and soluble fiber, Teeccino allows coffee drinkers to keep their same brewing ritual; they can even blend Teeccino with their coffee to slowly reduce the amount of caffeine daily while avoiding caffeine withdrawal symptoms like headaches and fatigue. Unlike coffee that is highly acidic, Teeccino is alkaline for the system helping to reduce the acidity of our diets. It also contains inulin, a prebiotic from chicory root that supports a healthy population of beneficial digestive flora and helps balance blood sugar.  Teeccino comes in 10 delicious coffee flavors like Vanilla Nut, Maya Caffé, Chocolaté, and Hazelnut.

You'll find both Get Heart and Teeccino at natural food and specialty grocery stores throughout the country. Or buy them online at www.teeccino.com.

Upcoming Events:
SWH logo2 Performing, Sharing, and Inspiring at Speaking of Women's Health
Events of the Heart is all about the sisterhood!  On October 25th, we are participating in the Speaking of Women's Health Universal Sisters Conference at the NY Hilton, serving 1,000 African American women from across the boroughs. The day features keynote presentations by national and local experts, live cooking and exercise demonstrations, health screenings, breakout sessions on heart disease, diabetes, nutrition, and stress management to name a few. As always, our message will be preventative doctor visits, taking care of yourself, and listening to your heart.

Pick of the Month:
Our Fall Faves
*Quinoa with fresh herbs from The Juicy Naam
*Scarves long and short but most of all soft softer softest
*Boyfriend jeans, the kind that are as comfy and loose as a broken in boyfriend
*Downloading my new crush of a song on iTunes: THE QUEST, by Bryn Christopher
*Buying 2 new books, my faves
*Riding Boots from J.Crew
*Taking a drive up to Dia in Beacon, NY
*Matinee tickets (the choices are many). Drama does it for me!
*Changing scents to something more woody, spicy & earthy,
like BOND 19's Lexington Ave scent, or Jo Malone's Dark Amber and Ginger Lily
*Of course, new fall makeup.  The seasons change, as does our clothes and coloring. The best I found was a fantastic new brand, JOUER, that adds vitamin E for moisture. The containers are lego-like, snapping together into a very interesting sculpture to carry around-- and just like the Fall, forms a new shell of clothing on our bodies
*A facial is a wonderful gift to yourself.  Peel off some summer sun and add in some Winter Quench, which by the way, is the name of my new uber product from Kate Sommerville.  SIMPLY DIVINE!!
**And last, but not least what would Fall be without a cashmere mention: my honorable mention this season goes to INHABIT. Pricey but luscious, naughty and very very nice

Ok! That's enough buying for now. It's almost the holidays anyway, so look for more goodies right here on our fave page.

Till next season!
